How to Style a Synthetic Wig to Look Real
September 8, 2026

The difference between a synthetic wig that looks fake and one that looks like your actual hair comes down to a handful of styling steps most people skip. The wig itself matters — but what you do to it matters just as much.

This guide covers the real techniques for making a synthetic wig look natural, from the moment you put it on to the finishing touches that sell the illusion.

Start with the Right Foundation: Cap Fit and Positioning

A wig that sits wrong looks wrong — no amount of styling fixes incorrect placement. Before anything else, get the fit right.

Position at your natural hairline. The wig's front edge should sit about one to two finger-widths above your eyebrows — right at your natural hairline, not further back. Many people position wigs too far back, which immediately reads as artificial.

Secure the perimeter. Adjust the internal straps so the cap fits snugly without being tight. If you have a lace front wig, lay the lace flat against your forehead — any bubbling or lifting makes the hairline visible.

Blend your edges. If your own edges are visible under the front of the wig, use an edge brush and a small amount of edge control to lay them smooth.

Fix the Part: The Single Most Important Step

Nothing exposes a synthetic wig faster than a part that looks like a painted line. Most wigs come with a machine-made part that lacks the natural irregularity of a real scalp.

For lace front and lace part wigs: Apply a small amount of skin-toned concealer or foundation along the part line to mimic a scalp. Use a makeup sponge to blend lightly.

Use dry shampoo or hair powder at the root: A light dusting of dry shampoo in a shade close to your scalp color adds texture and makes the part look three-dimensional.

Avoid perfectly straight parts: Real hair parts are rarely geometrically straight. Use a tail comb to create a slightly irregular part line.

Tame the Synthetic Shine

The telltale sign of a synthetic wig is often the sheen — that slightly plastic-looking shine that human hair doesn't have.

Dry shampoo: Spray dry shampoo lightly over the wig — especially the top layer and around the part. This adds texture and mattifies the sheen significantly.

Laying wig edges and baby hairs with edge control brush

Fabric softener rinse: After washing your wig, rinse it in a diluted fabric softener solution (1 tablespoon per 2 cups of water). This softens the fibers and reduces that stiff, shiny appearance.

Anti-shine spray: Some wig-specific anti-shine sprays are designed to reduce sheen without coating the fibers. Apply lightly from a distance of at least 12 inches.

Style with Your Hands, Not a Brush

Brushing synthetic wigs creates frizz. Once synthetic fibers are brushed aggressively, they fluff out and lose the smooth, natural appearance they had out of the box.

Use a wide-tooth comb for detangling when the wig needs it, starting from the ends and working toward the roots. For day-to-day styling and shaping, use your fingers.

Add Dimension with Accessories and Layers

Face-framing pieces: Pull a few strands forward around your face and style them slightly differently than the rest of the wig. This breaks the uniform look of a wig and creates the layered appearance real hair has.

Accessories: A headband worn slightly back from the hairline, a half-up style, or a clip at the crown all draw attention to the overall shape rather than the hairline.

Baby hairs: If your wig has a lace front, you can use a small amount of edge control and a fine-toothed comb to lay a few baby hairs along the hairline. Keep them subtle.

Match the Wig to Your Skin Tone and Brows

The color of the wig matters for how natural it reads against your face. A color that contrasts too sharply with your skin tone or your natural brows will always look slightly off, regardless of how well the wig is styled.

If your wig is a significantly different color from your natural hair, fill in your brows to bridge the visual gap.

What Not to Do

  • Don't use regular hair products. Products formulated for human hair can coat synthetic fibers and cause buildup or discoloration. Use wig-specific products where possible.
  • Don't sleep in it. Movement during sleep creates tangles and frizz that are difficult to reverse in synthetic fiber.
  • Don't skip the wig cap. A wig cap smooths your natural hair underneath and creates a stable base. Without it, the wig can shift and the silhouette looks lumpy.
  • Don't let it air dry in a pile. After washing, always place the wig on a stand to dry. Drying in a folded or compressed shape sets wrinkles and distorts the style.
