Lace front wigs look the most natural of any wig type when applied correctly. But getting there requires more than just putting the wig on your head. The hairline application is what separates a convincing result from one that looks obviously like a wig.
This guide walks through the complete process — prep, application, lace trimming, and the finishing steps that make the hairline look real.
What You'll Need
- Lace front wig
- Wig cap in your scalp tone
- Got2b Glued gel or wig adhesive spray (optional, for lace adhesion)
- Scissors (small, sharp)
- Foundation or concealer matching your scalp
- Edge control
- Fine-bristle edge brush
- Satin scarf or headband
- T-pins (to hold the wig while trimming lace)
Step 1: Prep Your Natural Hair
Flat hair under the wig cap is the foundation of a clean installation. Any lumps or thickness will translate through the cap and affect how the wig sits.
Braid method: Create flat cornrows straight back or in a circular pattern for longer hair. The flatter the braids, the better the wig will sit.
Slicked method: For shorter or thinner hair, apply a small amount of gel and slick the hair flat around your head in the direction of growth. Let it dry completely before putting on the wig cap.

Step 2: Apply the Wig Cap
Pull the wig cap down to just above your natural hairline. Tuck in any stray hairs. The cap should be smooth and flat against your scalp with no visible bumps or folds.
If the cap doesn't match your scalp tone, apply a thin layer of foundation to the cap at the front to create a more seamless blend with the lace.
Step 3: Position the Wig
Hold the wig by the ear tabs and tilt it forward to place it on your head. Slide it from back to front so the lace lands at your natural hairline — not behind it, and not overlapping your forehead significantly.
The wig's hairline should align precisely with where your natural hair begins to grow. Spend time adjusting this before securing anything.

Step 4: Secure the Wig
Use the wig's built-in combs — at the temples, crown, and nape — to anchor it. Push each comb gently but firmly into your natural hair or wig cap. Adjust the nape straps until the wig sits snugly with no movement when you turn your head.
Step 5: Trim the Lace
The lace extends past the hairline and needs to be cut before the wig looks finished. This step is irreversible, so work carefully.
Use small, sharp scissors. Cut along the natural hairline edge, leaving a thin strip of lace (about 1mm) against the skin. Follow the natural curve of the hairline — not a straight line across.
Take your time cutting around the temples, which curve inward. Rushed lace trimming is the most common source of uneven hairlines.
Step 6: Apply Foundation to the Lace (Optional but Recommended)
Even after trimming, the lace is still a different shade than your skin. Applying foundation or concealer in your scalp tone to the lace makes it nearly invisible.
Use a sponge or your fingertip to pat — not rub — a thin layer of product onto the lace. Blend it slightly onto the hairline skin as well so there's no visible line between the two.
Step 7: Lay the Edges and Melt the Lace

Apply a small amount of Got2b gel or strong-hold edge control to the hairline and use your edge brush to press the lace flat against your skin. Wrap a satin scarf tightly around the hairline for 5–10 minutes. When you remove it, the lace will be pressed flat and the hairline will look smooth and skin-like.
How to Remove a Lace Front Wig Safely
If you used adhesive or gel along the lace, don't pull the wig off. Apply a small amount of oil (coconut oil, olive oil) or adhesive remover to a cotton pad and press it gently against the lace edge. Hold for 15–30 seconds until the bond softens, then lift the edge slowly.
For glueless installations, simply unsnap the combs, loosen the straps, and lift the wig from the nape forward.
